Great Turnout!

Thank you so much to everyone who came to the reading tonight! So many buttons were made, screen printing turned out really well (Thanks Natalie & Clara), about seventy people came to the reading, we had a live performance from the artist Suicide, great performances from all our poets, and we almost sold out of books! If you couldn't make it be sure to get your copy of pufferfish magazine from our shopify (it will be available soon) at: http://neutralzone.myshopify.com/
Also for those who didn't get information on how to download the audio submissions, they are available on soundcloud whose link you can access here  (Suicide's song Pray will be  available soon but is not currently posted)
In addition: Keep paying attention to our feed because I'll be hitting you up with more interviews soon from those who didn't get posted before the reading!

Great reading! Thank you to Dea Chapell, Kyndall Flowers, Lily Kujawski, and the alien in the corner for reading their pieces tonight. Also thank you to Violet Seeburger, Dylan Gilbert, and Ricky McLilly for performing for us (though they are not pictured above). Finally, thank you for all the other artists who made it out tonight: Eleanor Olson, Yuchen Yang, Ezra Kushmaul, and any others who I didn't have a chance to speak with! You all made this happen!

We unfortunately only have access to two photos for this post, (we have since discovered more), however if you are really dying to meet Yuchen or Violet, creators of Teens Deserve More Sleep and Untitled,  respectively, come drop by the reading tomorrow where their actual faces will be present! (Links in pictures below)

These next few weeks The Red Beard Press Blog will be featuring the artists who will be published in Pufferfish. We will be showing some excerpts from their work and conducting interviews with those who are interested. Stay tuned to hear more from the Artists!!! Until then, continue to tune in to the important and moving words from our previous authors such as Carlina Duan who, from Malaysia reminds me daily to refresh how I think about and take up space. As well as how I perceive and consume the things as close/distant as language.

"shondrea and i talked about how language is your power. some days, admittedly, i zone out. in my town, bahasa malayu gushes in fast rivers out the mouths of every neighbor, 7-11 cashier, fruit stall owner, teacher, friend. around me, language lives -- takes a breath, picks its nose. and when i fall out of the language train and do not understand, i feel like i get squeezed to tight quarters, constricted and lonely and sad. but i have to believe that i'm being made better for it: stronger, sturdier, questioning so much about my own history of being raised in a bilingual world, while putting in the work/wait to learn this new language." -Excerpt from the blog of former Red Beard Supervisor and Co-author of Electric Bite Woman, Carlina Duan (see more)

Up & Coming Pufferfish Release Party!

4/12/2016

Authors, artists, and musicians who will be featured in the First Edition of Pufferfish Magazine and supporters of those artists:
while reviewing the pufferfish event date, April 30th (mark your calendars!), we realized that not only is the release date both the Friday before AP testing begins, it is also the same night as the U of M's graduation ceremony. The humanity! Therefore, we have decided to begin PR now! Please try to find a way to make it to our event even though parking will be pretty much non-existent! There will be a lot of fresh and upcoming authors reading that night and for many it could be their first performance in front of an audience. It would, I am certain, mean the world to your friends and peers that you make it out to support them and their art! It would be great to have a healthy turn-out for this event. Take the bus! Walk! Ride a giant toad! Dogs welcome! (I actually do not have the authority to say that but maybe!) Humans definitely welcome! Aliens too! Please share this post or tell your friends and teachers about this event and help us overcome the wrath of the UM Senior Class of 2016.

    About Red Beard Press

Red Beard Press is an independent, youth-driven publishing company dedicated to creating cutting-edge literary arts projects, publishing emerging voices, and inspiring passionate literary communities.

Essentially... youth publishing the emerging voices of other youth & attempting to spark a love for words.

We hope to fill a vital role in rediscovering the unity that once connected our society to literature. We have the potential to pique both current and future generations' interest in the literary arts, bringing together an increasingly diverse population with a common desire to read good books. It's urgent that RBP flourish in today's society in order to impress upon young people that literature still has the power to serve as a bridge to both inspiration and insightful dialogue.

Red Beard Press is also necessary in order to provide a platform for youth voices in Ann Arbor and beyond. It will help amplify how we feel and how we process our world in a society where our voices are often either misinterpreted or drowned out.

We need books for our literary imaginations to survive and we need to create opportunities for young people to to write them. Red Beard Press aims to fill those needs by publishing books that young people will want to read and by putting those books directly in their hands.
